You know how it goes.

For Louis Craig Dalrymple on his birthday.

You know how it goes.

You want a better job,
a nicer bed,
more vacation time,
more sun,
less heat,
less work,
more money,
less money,
Health,
You want a lover,
You want to be single,
You want to gain weight,
lose weight,
sleep more,
party more,
You want taxes to be easy,
friendships richer,
avocados ripe at all time – not too ripe-,
You want the car in front of you to always signal,
And the person who you held the door open for to always say,
Thank you.
You want buses to run on time,
They won’t.
You want parents not to get old,
They will.
You want to live in a cheap and sunny house,
Next to your friends,
and your favorite burrito shop,
And you know how it is
the list goes on..
And then, suddenly,
you have them all,
and then you want more,
because there’s a loneliness in this world
That can’t be filled with desires,
and we have seen that together
That slow movement of time
Sitting in a dead bar
Our gaze wandering on the landscape of solitude
Or on the bart when we talk about obscure movies
Or the philosophy classes we took in college

we sigh..
a deep sigh..
We envy the man who has little
We envy the farm houses
We miss the constant inquiry
One more sigh..
Then we sit in a quiet room,
close our eyes,
and try to breath,
try to calm the woodpecker in our chest,
calm the locomotive in our head,
we try to calm the earthquake in our body ..
we keep on breathing,
and then everything is just about right.
I know you know that sometimes truly being here is so much,
I have seen it in your still boyish eyes, behind all that you try to hold together
Sometimes this whole being a human is so much,
yet,
so beautiful,
so alive,
so exciting,
so perfect the way it is.

Now

Before you leave this house
Remember,
All we can do is go one day at a time,
One breath at a time,
One smile at a time,
One kiss at a time,
One day at a time,
One breath at a time,
One day at a time,
One breath at a time,
One bre…
aaaah…

  1. Oh, how I love this, the imagery, the pacing, the pausing. Here’s to the breath and to one day at a time navigating this journey. Hugs from my heart to yours!
