Kahlil Gibran – On Marriage

Rant:

Oh Hi! oh boy, it has been a minute since I’ve last sent you something, and I’m sure your inbox is happy about that – anyway, I was just busy bouncing from one coast to another – a few thoughts I’ve had in the past week – here’s are a few of them : 1) I am terrible at writing postcards… I write them too long, then I have space problem..2) I am making a list of things to say when someone knocks on the bathroom door, when you are in it — Public bathroom! 3) I am really feeling a calling from Colorado, I think I’m gonna go and hang there a for a few days!– here’s another one:

You,

sometimes,

express me better than myself –

and that’s why at times

I come to you for

refuge,

for laughter,

for advice.

Now! it is true that I am ultimately alone,

and so you are –

and I suggest we both take pride in that

as great Khalil says:

Even as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts,
but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together,
yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress
grow not in each other’s shadow.”

We are alone,

Yes.

— But my friend,

together we create something

that cannot be comprehended

–     or  written in words,

but can only be lived through flesh and soul –

isn’t that a form of love?

Poem:

Kahlil Gibran
On Marriage

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.
