William Stafford – Yes

Two Hundred and Two

Hello from the future! It’s 3:57 AM Jan 7th where I am, whereas most of you are just wrapping up your Friday, first week of the work after holidays.. some of you are tired.. some excited for the night, some maybe alone, some maybe lonely.. some of you will go into the night roaring, some of you will cuddle up and get cozy! Ah whatever you may be doing, let me tell you future isn’t too shabby, so rest assure and don’t worry. There are bad things and good things alike.. I say this from the lucky platform of time travel — It’s rather quiet where I am now.. sitting on a comfy couch in sleepy house in the early hours of Saturday morning and writing you this. Thinking of you is lovely, writing to you is lovely, this über late mom-made dinner I just ate is lovely, but you know there’s also that occasional blue note and pacing the room for 7 miles, there’s also that slow movement of clock and question of identity, that back pain, that parents aging, that dry cold, that this that that..

but

you, now, me, this! ah the bonuses!

Yes

It could happen any time, tornado,
earthquake, Armageddon. It could happen.
Or sunshine, love, salvation.

It could you know. That’s why we wake
and look out–no guarantees
in this life.

But some bonuses, like morning,
like right now, like noon,
like evening.
